Reading

In reading our class started a zoo project.  The zoo project is very similar to our passport tasks.  We have to complete 9 activities and they all revolve around animals.  When you choose a topic you have to find a book that you want to do the activity on. Our class can also get likes.  The better the activity the more likes. We also made title pages for this and here is mine:

Topic

In Room Five we started passport tasks for topic/inquiry.  I have started a diorama that looks like Mission Bay.  Passport task are really fun because I like crafting and drawing.  Their are different categories and amounts of money you can earn.  If you do really well you can get bonus but you have to earn at least 200 dollars.
The passport looks like this:

Gratitude Journal

This week in our class we started writing in gratitude journals.  Our teacher bought us each a journal in different designs.  On the front of my book it says "the most important thing about dreams: having one."  Every afternoon we write three things about what we are grateful for.  I like doing this because it makes we appreciate more.  On the first day doing this I wrote, friends, pets, and waking up in the morning. My gratitude journal looks like this:

Reading

Yesterday my reading group learnt about a Tongan myth called Maka Feke.  Its about an octopus and a rat.  The rat was travelling by a wooden canoe when all of a sudden a strong storm broke his boat.  When he saw an octopus close to shore he asked if he could ride him to the forest promising to repay him.  The octopus agreed and swam him over.  The rat ran into the forest saying
"Hahaha I tricked you!"
This trap carries on today with a White Cowry Shell used as a rat.  The fisherman with lure an octopus over with this trap and will have enough time to catch its prey.  Here is a drawing on our activity sheet I did.

Maths

Today in maths we made 3D shapes.  You could choose out of a cone, cube, rectangle, rectangular prism, pyramid, square based pyramid and more.  I made a square based pyramid and a cone.  Here is what they look like.

Our group's logo looks like this.

Sun Poem

This week in room five, we have been learning about sun poems.  Each of us wrote sentences about the sun.  The poems had to have six objects resembling the sun, verbs and adjectives. This is my poem.

The sun is a lemon
shining in peoples eyes
Its a big block of gold
scorching in the sky

The sun is a fireball
blazing brightly
Its a yellow bouncy ball
bouncing around lightly

The sun is a light bulb,
lighting up the world
Its a gold coin
bright and glistening up above

Water Science

Today we did a water experiment with ice and salt.  We got balls of ice in a bowl and then our teacher came around the tables with dye to put on the ice.  After we got the dye she came around with salt and we got to sprinkle it on the ice.  When we sprinkled the salt on the ice it started to crack, the dye helped us see the cracks.  We waited a bit until we got to go outside to crack the ice.  After we got outside it was time to crack them.  Each team went at different times.  Our group was last.  When we went we threw the ice up into the air and let it smash to the ground.  The bigger ones smashed more as the weight is heavier.  Because of this there was more force as it was falling.  Here is a picture.

Maori Art

In art we started sketching and colouring drawings inspired by Peter Gossage.  Peter Gossage is a New Zealand artist.  He draws a lot of Maori pictures and illustrates Maori books.  I drew a picture of Maui.  This is my drawing.

Water Cycle Experiment

On Friday last week we did a water filtering experiment.  In our lesson we learnt about the water cycle and how water gets filtered.  We got told that it takes six hours to clean water!  After we learnt about this we each got into partners and it was time for the experiment.  For the experiment there was a bucket of dirty and non-filtered water.  With that water we used different ingredients to filter it and make it cleaner.  The ingredient we had to use were cotton balls, paper towels, bark and sand.  Not every ingredient filtered it properly though.  When my partner and I finished using the ingredients we chose our own amount of the ingredients we could use to make it as clean as we could.  Me and my partner chose cotton balls and paper towels and it worked!  Here is what ours looks like.

Maths Co-ordinates

For maths this week, we have been learning to do co-ordinates.  The two pictures I did was a flossing panda and a car.  This is what my co-ordinates look like.

Because last week was Samoan Language Week we made posters about Samoa.  On our posters we have different activities and facts.  There are also writing prompts and how to count to ten. Another thing we did was an activity about a myth.  The myth we did was the Turtle and the Shark.  The Turtle and the Shark is about a women and her daughter.  Then there was a great famine all over where they lived, so they turned into a turtle and a shark to look for food on another island.  When they found food they decided to dance and entertain the people that were kind and gave them food.  This is what my poster looks like.

New Zealand Opera

Last week on Thursday the New Zealand opera came to perform and our school.  In opera they only sing and don't talk at all.  The story is about a girl and her stepmum.  There is also a boy and a barber.  The boy wants the girl so the barber helps him but the stepmother does not want the boy to be her daughter's husband so she tries to stop her.  Will the stepmother get her way or not?  I really liked opera this year, it was great!

Growth Mindset

In growth mindset we made a big paper brain.  We each coloured in a square of the brain and answered a question on it about growth mindset.  The question was, I will work longer when I am trying to figure something out. I will not give up quickly.  what are some strategies or things I might do to help me reach my goal?  Here is a photo of the brain.

At the end of this term we will be performing our own plays we made either about sun smart safety, growth mindset or bulling.  My group decided to chose bullying. I love drama and I hope we can continue it throughout the year.

Shrove Tuesday

Yesterday was Shrove Tuesday so we made pancakes with the juniors. We make pancakes because in Jesus' time before lent they used to give up ingredients like flour, eggs and milk so that they wouldn't rot over the 40 days of lent.  In the morning we had the burning of the palms.  The reason why we burn the palms is so on ash Wednesday the ashes get put in a cross on our head.  When we made the batter it was very lumpy and creamy and gooey but in the end the pancakes tasted great!  Here are some photos of the pancakes.
