Writing

In writing we have been writing procedural pieces.  Procedural writing is where you write instructions for something like a recipe.  We had to write a crazy recipe and I chose a mashed potato cake.  This is my recipe

Ingredients:
Potatoes- 3
Water- 900 mL
Food colouring- any colour and one or two drops
Skittles- as many as you want
Caster sugar- ¼ of a cup
Butter, milk (optional) if you want butter and milk you will need 70 grams of butter and ½ a cup of milk

Utensils:
A pot that you can boil the potatoes in- (boiler)
Something to mash your potatoes with- masher
Something to mix your food colouring with- a spoon or whisk

Something to cut u
Potato peeler
A bowl to mash your potatoes in and mix your food colouring in
A plate to place the cake

Steps:
Step one: peel your potatoes and chop them into bits

Step two: put your pot on your stove and pour all your water in
Step three: turn your stove’s heat to 210 degrees celsius
Step three: put your potatoes into the water to boil them, put a timer on for 15 mins
Step four: while you wait, get your bowl out
Step five: once they are finished turn your stove off and put your potatoes in your bowl
Step six: Mash your potatoes and add your sugar in , if you would like to add butter and milk, now is the time
Step Seven: When you have finished mashing your potatoes mix your food colouring in
Step eight: get out your plate and spoon your mashed potato onto it.
Step nine: get your skittles and sprinkle them over your mashed potato cake
Step ten: now you are finished and you can eat it!

Persuasive Writing Edible Bugs

🐛Eating Edible Bugs🐛

By: Annika DeLacey

I am learning to persuade my audience using persuasive writing.

What is the first word that comes to your mind when I say you should cook with bugs? “Ewwww?” Yes, that would probably come to your mind because that's what most people would say, but actually if you try them you might end up liking bugs because 90% of people that try bugs like them. I believe that everyone should try bugs, maybe as a creative dinner or a tasty treat.

Why shouldn’t we eat bugs as tasty treats? You can make scorpion lollipops, ginger cricket biscuits and mealworm fries but there are many more to try. If I were you I wouldn’t wait to try them because they are very tasty and we all need a treat sometimes right? So why don’t you add them to your everyday meals or maybe for a little snack throughout the day, especially because they are also very healthy.

Of course! Bugs are definitely healthy. They have lots of protein, vitamins, minerals and essential fats, plus, they don’t produce greenhouse gases. Bugs are great to eat in your everyday diet and they also have the same amount of protein as an egg. The healthiest bugs to have are beetles, cockroaches and crickets. Plus they are very low in calories so you can eat as many as you want. Not only bugs are healthy and tasty but they are also very fun to cook with. You can make a very creative meals with them and you can have it for dinner.

Don’t have any creative ideas for dinner? Well why don't you try cooking with bugs. There are some very creative ideas out there to try, for example, you can dip them in chocolate and eat them with tacos. Some bugs you can eat are mealworms, crickets, beetles, cockroaches, worms and the list could go on. Want to know more ways of cooking bugs? Well you can fry them, boil them and roast them. I bet once you finish your meal you will love its flavour and be delighted of how wonderful it is.

In conclusion you can see plenty of ways to cook with insects. From healthy to sweet, from their looks to their taste. So just remember bugs are very high in protein and great for a daily snack. They are also extremely tasty and great for something on the go as well and there are millions of recipes you can try. This is why I strongly agree with cooking with insects.

The Life Cycle of a Sea Turtle

I am learning to: write an explanation

Did you know that sea turtles have survived since the late Jurassic period? That was 150 million years ago. Sea Turtles are reptiles and they can not put their head hands or feet in their shell so they always have them poking out. There are three stages of a sea turtle, The eggs, baby sea turtles and adulthood. First it begins with the egg stage.

Eggs:
What looks like a ping pong ball and is white and leathery? Sea turtles eggs! We are starting off with the egg stage. The mother of the eggs would squirm to a spot with lower dunes to lay her eggs. Once she has found the spot she would dig a hole and lay her eggs. After she has laid her eggs it was time to cover it up with sand and walk back to the water. She would lay roughly 110-200 eggs. The eggs take about six weeks to hatch and they would be small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. When the little eggs hatch there next stage is to survive being a young sea turtle.

Baby Sea Turtles:
This next stage is baby sea turtles.Once a baby sea turtle hatches it crawls out of the hole and squirms to the water but on the way there are threats and predators. The baby sea turtles try to make it to the water but 50% will die. Some of the predators are crabs, seagulls, raccoons and much much more. The ones who make it to the water will find a patch of floating seaweed and settle there. About 50% who rise to the surface will die and end there life cycle.

Adulthood:
At adulthood you would have lived for around 80 years and you have to wait another 20 to survive to breeding age. Roughly 20% of adult sea turtles will survive without human interference and only 1% will survive with human interference. After they have finished their life cycle they repeat it again.

Today lots of Sea Turtles die every year with pollution such as plastic bags, plastic containers, oils, food packages, plastic water bottles and much much more. There are only seven more species of Sea Turtles left and six of them are endangered. So if you have plastic, instead of throwing it into the water, throw it in the bin.

The Switched off Robot

I am learning to: create a narrative based on an image

Click, click, click. That was Amy. She is on her computer, Her eyes glued to the screen, trying to be able to finish her homework on top of her comfortable bed. Amy is doing her homework because it is 2045 and this new year she wants to be on task everyday. Amy has long, curly brown hair and blue eyes, just like her mum. Amy loves the colour red and making robots too.

Grumble Grumble. Bang! She lands on the floor, I’m hungry. . She thinks to herself so as stealthy and as sneaky as she can she gets up and goes to the kitchen. Past her dog Snowy and through the hallway. She gets to the stairs and tiptoes down. Amy gets to the kitchen successfully and opens the fridge to see some glorious juice. Amy grabs the juice and then she sees chocolate so she grabs that too! Amy pulls the cupboard open and snatches a cup. Once she has got everything she pours the juice and chucks the juice in the fridge, then the rest of the chocolate away as well. Amy slurps and gobbles all of it up then sprints quickly and quietly up to her bedroom before anyone sees her.

Amy jumps back into bed and reads a book. A few minutes later just when she was going to put the book back she hears something outside. zzzzZZZZZ, zzzzzzzZZZZZZZ.

Krr Krr krr. She peeks outside her dark wet window and she sees a GIANT SHINY BIG RED ROBOT!!! As much as she loves the colour red and loves robots she knows she can’t let it in but she can’t help but go back downstairs and let the robot in. Amy sees the robot is shivering and cold so she grabs a towel and drys the robot off. Amy also grabs a blanket and covers the robot up. They then talk for awhile and become friends straight away. But when they were finished talking and Amy was tired she had to get the robot out. She sent him outside and Amy went back up to bed. She fell asleep dreaming about the red robot.

( yawn ) Amy rolls out of bed and opens her eyes so sleepily she can’t even get up!

Then mum comes in. Oh ohhh Amy says in her mind. “AMYYYYYY!” mum shouts.

“IT”S 8:22am!”

“Okay, okay I’ll get dressed, now go please.” Once Amy can finally get up and get dressed. She grabs her uniform and chucks it on her. She goes downstairs and fills up her water bottle, takes her lunch, then mum and Amy leave the house. “ Bye Snowy,” she says. “woof, woof,” barks Snowy. Then off they go, amy is hoping that she gets there on time.

It’s 8:34am and they're almost at school. “ Mum can you look for my red robo?” Amy said.

“ What?” Mum screamed. “Ohh fine, last night I found a red robot and I really wanted him back because I let him outside. So can you look for it? Please?”

“WHAT, A RED ROBOT,” asked mum. “Shh, shhh it’s okay, but please will you just look for it ?” asked Amy.

“Alright then,” mum said. As Amy grabbed the door and handle and pushed the door open she jumped out of the car and walked into the school gates. Mum drove off and starts searching for the red robot.

Mum searched and searched but it was nowhere. Then just as she was racing home she sees a ginormous red tall sharp armed ROBOT!!! “AHHHHHH,” Mum screamed, “that must be Amy’s robot!” Mum slowly clicks the door open and crouches down for a few seconds then runs over and talks to him. “Hello, do you know Amy?” she mumbles. “Yes I do we are good friends,” says the red robot.
“Ok so can you please come home with me? Amy is looking for you and she is really sad,” says mum.
“Ok,” the robot says in a robot voice.
Then mum glides back into the car and rides off, with the robot behind her. When they arrive home, it’s almost time for Amy to come back so mum starts cooking dinner.

The door creaks open and Amy Strides in. “Hi mum!” Amy sweetly says.
“Hi Amy, I found your robot,” mum said.
“Thats awesome I’m just going to get changed,” says Amy. She runs upstairs and chooses a red dress with robots all over it. While Amy is getting dressed mum accidentally switches something off (and doesn't realize she switched off the robot!). Amy races downstairs and she has a VERY EXCITED EXPRESSION! Her expression doesn’t turn off and she is the most happiest girl in the world, she cannot wait to see her ROBOT!!! But once she got down and tried to play with it, it doesn't work. Amy starts panicking, “ MUM MY ROBOT ISN”T WORKING, NOOOOOO!” Amy Screams. Mum speeds around the house trying to look for something to fix it but they don’t see anything!!

They finally they get back to the robot and mum realizes that she might have switched it off!

They look around for the switch and they find it. When it gets switched back on, Amy jumps up and down non stop. The robot walks to Amy then they become best friends.

“I will name you… RED, yes, RED,” says Amy. After playing together it’s time for bed. Amy sets down a warm fluffy blanket for Red and she rests in her bed. They snuggle up tightly and shut their eyes, fall asleep deeply and dream about ROBOTS!

The Most Disgusting Meal

The Most Disgusting Meal
By Annika D
14.02.18

I am learning to inform my audience by sharing an entertaining moment.

“NO NOT THIS DINNER,” I was sitting on my bed in my bedroom at my holiday home. But suddenly I smelt something BAD. The best thing to do if you smell something bad is get away from it but no I didn’t do that. I jumped off of my bed and walked over to my bedroom door. I opened my bedroom door and suddenly I get and BIG whiff of EXTREMELY BAD PUMPKIN SOUP! I cover my nose as I walk closer but once I got to close I just couldn't bear the smell so before my mum could see me I ran back to my room and sat on my bed waiting anxiously before she called my brothers and I.

“ANNIKA, HARRISON, JOAQUIN, CORUM” OH NO it was time she had called us. So I hopped off my bed and slowly walked over to the bedroom door. It creaked open and I saw all my brothers sitting at the dinner table. My mum was dishing it all up. So I walked over and pulled my chair out. Then I sat down still smelling it, the horrid smell. I could see the pumpkin soup out of the corner of my eye my tummy got butterflies and just as it it was getting better I could see my mum bringing it to ME. it got closer and closer and once she put it on the table it just made me sick!

I was sitting there looking at it and smelling it but it was much worse because it was right there! Then she came over with the bread and put it on the plate. While I was shivering picking the bread up I could hear that disgusting sound of my mum sloping the pumpkin soup into the bowls. Then I dipped my bread into the horrible pumpkin soup. As I brought it closer to my mouth it terrified me. I COULD NOT EAT IT!

I was waiting for my mum to shout at me and say EAT IT but I couldn’t, I just couldn’t.
So I pushed my pumpkin soup aside and leaped off my chair gagging. Running into the bathroom as I try and vomit it is disgusting. My mum calling me from the bathroom,” GET OUT HERE, GET OUT HERE”. But no I didn’t I was still throwing up! I finally stopped and wiped my mouth walked out and said sorry but I really did NOT want to eat that meal.

That is the story of when I threw up about to eat pumpkin soup. Now that I think about it pumpkin soup is really nice. But since that day sometimes I just want soup!

Our Road Trip To Puhoi

Our Road trip to Puhoi!!!

I was sitting in the car with my two brothers and my mum and dad driving to Puhoi. I was waiting to hear the salty waves crash against the soft sand and the sand pushing against the sharp edged rocks. To hear the birds sing beautifully and to eat some delicious food. I could picture it all in my mind. My mouth was already watering!

Finally! We were at our first stop! I could just smell it, it was right at the tip of my nose. I was waiting for it just waiting! We ate our food it was great! After we raced to the beach.

I heard those salty waves crashing to the sand and the sand crashing to those very sharp rocks plus those birds we took some photos and drove off to get ice cream.

At the ice cream shop I picked my flavour and gobbled it all up. That ice cream was great so satisfying. Sadly, it was time to go home. We walked right out and jumped into the car and raced of. That was a great road trip and I would definitely do it again!!!
